Nestled on the west shoreline of
Cottonwood Lake, Dragonfly Gardens offers
an amazing panoramic view of Pioneer Peak, Three Sisters, the
Chugach Range, and the Talkeetna Range.
During the summer, the gardens having a variety of annual and perennial beds filled with whimsical yard art. An evening patio and rock garden offer evening portable fires and sunset watching. The dock is perfect for morning coffee and wildlife watching. Swimming is approved for the hardy during July and August. The woods are available for a quick hike with your dog in the summer and cross-country skiing in the winter. There is even a meditation garden on the lake-side for morning warmth or afternoon shade.

The bed and breakfast is a non-smoking, self-contained second-floor studio with a private entry and balcony. The private bedroom has a queen bed with comfy flannel sheets and down comforter. The bath has a shower, no bathtub. Monogrammed plush cotton terry robes and scented soap by Arctic Crafts supplied. The living area offers an Efficiency kitchen, queen sleeper sofa, and dining table. DISH Network with Pay-Per-View is available as well as a variety of DVDs, and wireless internet. The telephone has a separate private number (toll-restricted) and answering machine. |
Breakfast is your choice – a variety
(breads, cereals, yogurt, waffles, and eggs/bacon, tea, and juice) is provided in the
self-contained kitchen along with coffee locally roasted and blended by
Kaladi Brothers Coffee Co.

Dogs are welcome. Please remember we, too, have pets so request only visiting pets who like other dogs. There are woods for walking, special areas for pottying (baggies provided), and a crate when you need to leave your pet behind. Your doggie can expect Alaskan salmon treats and its own bowl.
During your stay you may enjoy the loons and grebes that spend their summers nesting along the shoreline while eagles nest in the trees. Ravens visit to ride the wind over Cottonwood Creek while muskrats travel up the creek searching for fresh water clams. Squirrels chatter in the trees, owls hunt by night, and a variety of ducks take up housekeeping on the creek and neighboring lakes. Wintertime brings awe inspiring displays of the aurora borealis (northern lights) and frost formations.

About Your Hosts
Jim and Pam Holen both moved to Alaska as kids and met in high school. After college, they settled first in Anchorage and later in Wasilla. They built their home on Cottonwood Lake 20 years ago with the help of their two young sons. Jim is a retired high school guidance counselor who plays basketball, runs, and cross-country skis with the dogs. He is a clinician at the local Juvenile Assessment Center. Pam is a part-time program coordinator for the CASA Program, an amateur photographer, master gardener; and, she trains her border collies for the performance sport of agility and obedience.

| The sound of nature waking up on summer mornings beckons me to enjoy a peaceful start to our day on the dock. On warm days, I sit and listen to the loons and grebes call across the lake while the eagles and ravens ride the breeze above me. Blue and I were enjoying the performance one morning when I observed her swat at a passing dragonfly, knocking it into the lake. As I sat there debating whether to wade into the water to save it or to let the fish have breakfast, another dragonfly swooped down and caught the drowning friend in its grasp. They flew a distance together before they separated and then came back across the dock and into the woods. I was astounded to watch an insect save the life of another fellow insect. It was the day we decided to name our fledging dream of a bed and breakfast establishment – Dragonfly Gardens – as a remembrance of our beautiful little friends.........Pam Holen |
DRIVING DIRECTIONS
From Anchorage: Drive north on the Glenn Highway, Highway 1, for 35
miles. When you reach the overpasses, look for the overhead direction sign for the Parks
Highway, Highway 3. It is also the highway to Fairbanks and Denali Park. You need to stay
in one of the two left lanes. The next traffic light is 4.4 miles at the Seward Meridian
Parkway, turn right. At the next traffic light (one mile), turn right onto the
Palmer-Wasilla Highway. North Shoreline Drive is .7 miles, between Town and Country
Furniture Store and Flooring America. Turn left and drive .4 miles until the asphalt ends
and you encounter a “T.” Turn right and then take the left fork (it goes
downhill) for .3 miles. Dragonfly Gardens B&B is the first house on the right after
you cross Cottonwood Creek
From Fairbanks: Drive through Wasilla on the Parks Highway until you
reach the first traffic light - intersection at the Seward Meridian Road. It is located
between WalMart and Sears. Turn left and drive 1 mile to the first traffic light -
Palmer-Wasilla Highway, turn right. North Shoreline Drive is .7 miles, on the left between
Town and Country Furniture Store and Flooring America. Turn left and drive .4 miles until
the asphalt ends and you encounter a “T.” Turn right and then take the left fork
(it goes downhill) for .3 miles. Dragonfly Gardens B&B is the first house on the right
after you cross Cottonwood Creek.
From Glenallen: Drive the Glenn Highway south to Palmer. At the traffic
light at the intersection for the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, turn right. Drive 7.4 miles to
the Town and Country Furniture Store on the right. Turn right on North Shoreline Drive.
Drive .4 miles until the asphalt ends and you encounter a “T.” Turn right and
then take the left fork (it goes downhill) for .3 miles. Dragonfly Gardens B&B is the
first house on the right after you cross Cottonwood Creek.
